Clinical overview

Understanding Ovulation Induction

Many women struggling to conceive simply do not release an egg reliably each month, due to conditions like PCOS or mild hormonal imbalances. Ovulation Induction uses well-tolerated oral medication (such as Letrozole) to stimulate follicular recruitment, accompanied by serial ultrasound monitoring to identify the exact window for timed intercourse.

Is this pathway likely to be relevant for you?

Situations in which a specialist may suggest discussing this treatment:

  • Women with irregular menstrual cycles, oligomenorrhoea, or PCOS
  • Couples with normal semen parameters and confirmed open fallopian tubes
This list is not a diagnosis. Whether Ovulation Induction is right for you depends on your own test results and history.

Step by step

What actually happens, stage by stage

Knowing the sequence in advance removes a great deal of anxiety. Timings are typical rather than fixed, and yours will be confirmed by your specialist.

  1. Day 2 baseline scan

    Ultrasound check · Day 2

Confirms no residual cysts are present before starting oral medication.

  2. Oral medication phase

    Letrozole support · Day 3–7

Taking 2.5mg to 5mg of Letrozole daily for five days to encourage follicle selection.

  3. Serial ultrasound tracking

    Folliculometry · Day 10–13

Checking dominant follicle size on Day 10 and Day 12, until it reaches 18 to 20mm.

  4. Timed intercourse guidance

    Optimal window · Day 13–15

Clear instructions on the 36-hour window for intercourse, to coincide with the natural LH surge or trigger.

Frequently asked about Ovulation Induction

Letrozole does not thin the uterine lining or dry cervical mucus as clomiphene can, and has demonstrated higher live-birth rates with lower twin risks in clinical trials.
